What do I do if I am the victim of a crime, or witness a crime or policy violation?
If you are the victim of a crime, or witness an offense occurring on campus, report it immediately to Public Safety by calling the emergency number 808-6363 or activating any Emergency Phone on campus.

If you are off campus, or the offense occurred off campus, contact the Chicago Police Department by calling 911. After you report it to the Chicago Police Department, it is recommended that you further contact Public Safety or The Dean of Students to inform them of the incident.

If I need the police, fire department, or paramedics, shouldn't I just call 911?
Unfortunately, the City of Chicago Emergency Services (Police, Fire, Paramedics) cannot contact Public Safety directly if there is an on-campus emergency. It is important for Public Safety to respond concurrently with public emergency services on campus. It is best to contact Public Safety at 808-6363 in addition to calling 911. Public Safety can respond within 30-60 seconds to any location on campus. This increased response time could mean the difference between life or death.

Sometimes I get asked to show my IIT ID by Public Safety, why do they need that?
All students are required by the IIT University Code of Student Conduct to carry their IIT ID with them at all times and display it upon the request by a university official. The purpose of this procedure is strictly for the safety and security of everyone on campus. Please do not become offended if you are asked to show your ID.

If I miss the bus, will Public Safety provide me a ride?
The IIT Public Safety Department will provide security escorts to Students, Staff or Faculty only within the campus limits. The Public Safety Department is unable to provide rides just for convenience or if you missed the Shuttle Bus.

If the Shuttle Bus or Mini-Van is not running, will Public Safety provide me a ride to a nearby shopping location?
Because of jurisdictional restraints, Public Safety cannot provide security escorts off campus. Public Safety will only provide escorts to Mercy Hospital or Michael Reese Hospital after hours, or a security escort as described in the above paragraph.

Last fall I called for a ride, and the officer showed up on a bike. How can I get a ride on a bike with all my belongings and packages?
Public Safety provides a Security Escort. This may be in the form of an officer on bike patrol riding next to you, or even an officer walking next to you. Escorts are not provided for convenience or in lieu of a taxi. They are provided to ensure your safety while getting around campus. If an officer arrives in a vehicle they are not expected to assist with your luggage or packages.

I don't need a security escort, but I have a broken leg, and it is difficult for me to get around campus. Can I call Public Safety for a ride?
Public Safety does provide escorts for medical disabilities. If you require special assistance, Public Safety will provide it for you. Please remember that your request may be of lower priority and we may have to respond to higher priority calls first. Please allow yourself ample time when calling Public Safety for these requests.

I need to get access to a lab after hours, but I do not have a key and the lab is locked. Will Public Safety let me in?
For security purposes, Public Safety Officers may only allow authorized users access to a room after hours. If you need access please be certain you obtain prior authorization in writing from your department head, or professor. The preferred method of authorization is via e-mail. The authorization must include the authorizing person's name, title and contact telephone number. Please include a copy of the e-mail to publicsafety@iit.edu. You must present a valid IIT ID with a copy of the written authorization to Public Safety when requesting access.

Is my U-Pass an acceptable form of identification for IIT?
Although the U-Pass may have your picture on it, it is not accepted as an official form of identification for the university. The U-Pass does not indicate the validity of your status on campus.

I am staying with a friend at Bailey and he is out of the country. Can Public Safety let me into the room or apartment?
For security purposes, Public Safety will only access an apartment to the person whose name is on the lease. If you are staying with the person and not on the lease, we cannot allow you into the room without prior written authorization from the lease holder. Please refer to your lease agreement or contact the Housing Office for clarification on visitors or live in roommates.
